Held on June 21, 2023 as the first event on the ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum programme and calendar, the VIP Opening Night was an introduction to the summer that would be a celebration of contemporary African art, fashion, and design. Distinguished guests immersed themselves in the curated world of ALÁRA, where each piece tells a unique story of heritage, identity and innovation. From captivating exhibitions to exclusive collaborations, the night marked the debut of ALÁRA’s distinctive presence at the Brooklyn Museum, giving attendees the first look into the collective artistry and creativity.
Under the Brooklyn skyline, the ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum VIP Opening Afterparty took place with a host of celebrations and entertainment. As an extension of the VIP Opening, the afterparty unfolded as invited influencers, tastemakers, and cultural enthusiasts mingled against the backdrop of the museum, indulging in the immersive experience that ALÁRA brought to New York. The night was a vibrant culmination of cultural fusion, forging new connections and celebrating the dynamic meeting of a diaspora.
On the evening of September 20, 2023, ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum alongside previously mentioned official drink sponsor, Bayab Gin, had the profound privilege of hosting a UN General Assembly Showcase and exhibition tour. This grand event welcomed esteemed guests, including the distinguished Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados, Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada of Sao Tome, and the First Lady of Kwara State and Chairperson Nigeria Governors Wives’ Forum, Her Excellency Ambassador Dr Olufolake Abdulrazaq. Also in attendance were esteemed dignitaries and First Ladies.
On June 22, 2023, ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum continued the discourse on African art and influence with a captivating panel talk featuring Reni Folawiyo, Artsi Ifrach, as well as Kehinde Wiley. The Africa & Influence Panel Talk delved into the intersection of art, culture, and global impact. Reni Folawiyo, the visionary behind ALÁRA, Artsi Ifrach, a trailblazing artist, and Kehinde Wiley, renowned for his powerful portraiture, engaged in a rich dialogue that explored the nuances of African creativity and its profound influence on the global stage. The event encapsulated the essence of ALÁRA’s commitment to fostering conversations that transcend borders and celebrate expression.
In an exploration of Africa’s ascent in the global fashion arena, ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum, in partnership with Black Fashion Fair, presented a panel talk titled ‘In Conversation: Africa’s Global Rise in Fashion.’ This enlightening discussion featured three designers—Taofeek Abijako, Jacques Agbobly, and Abrima Erwaih. The evening celebrated the dynamic voices propelling Africa’s fashion renaissance, offering a glimpse into the vibrant future that lies ahead. It was an honour to host such a discussion, contributing to the collective narrative of Africa’s global rise in the realm of style.
On the evening of September 6, 2023, ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum, alongside event partners and financiers, META, hosted the launch event for the ASAKE x waf. T-shirt Collaboration. The event was not just a celebration of fashion but a platform for emerging creatives. Edvin Thompson of Theophilo and Raya Khaled, ASAKE’s stylist, hosted a styling workshop with up and coming fashion creatives to show how they develop their unique styles. Each stylist-model duo explained their style-up for the audience to showcase their talents and compete for the best look. Attendees got an exclusive preview of ASAKE’s newest collaboration with Wafflesncream, available for a limited time at the Brooklyn Museum and online. This event was made possible in partnership with Bayab Gin as an official drink sponsor and partner.
As a finale, ALÁRA at Brooklyn Museum, in collaboration with CÎROC, concluded its memorable journey with a special Closing Dinner. The evening was generously sponsored and partnered with CÎROC. Under the expert guidance of Chef Serigne Mbaye, the table was graced with culinary delights, turning the evening into a formalised ending and renowned stylist and travel editor, Alexander Julian, co-hosted the affair. As the chapter closed off, we reflected on the invaluable moments shared. Beyond a collaboration, it has been an exchange of ideas, an amalgamation of creativity, and a heartfelt celebration of our unique stories.
